PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS CHANGES

  • Can differentiate the smell of one human or dog from another
  • Have developed about 80% of their coordination and agility
  • Lots of shedding of their baby coat as they develop their own distinctive coat
  • By nine months most dogs are 80% of the size they will grow to
  • By nine months they will have all 42 teeth developed which makes it easy to tear through furniture and other belongings.

SOCIALISATION

  • Hormones rule
  • A busy time for obedience schools
  • Continue with obedience and behavioural training
  • Excited easily, especially on outing, meeting other dogs, visitors at home
  • Still prone to “mad moments”

FEEDING

  • Feeding can drop back to twice a day
  • Don’t let them chew on anything they can swallow – because their curious nature will probably ensure this happens
  • Try to feed at the same time each day
  • Allowing them to eat whenever they want now is a sure way to ensure obesity in adulthood
  • Keep on puppy food to ensure they are getting the right amount of nutrition.

VACCINATIONS AND TREATMENTS

  • Get your puppy spayed or neutered (desexed)
  • Brush and comb their coat daily
  • Brush their teeth daily
  • Should have received all their vaccine shots by six months
  • Maintain heartworm, flea and worm prevention, and tick prevention in areas where they are a problem.
