Boy holding his puppy

6-11 Weeks

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS CHANGES

  • Has much better bladder control now
  • Grows used to sleeping through the night
  • Still sleeping about 75% of the day

SOCIALISATION

  • Puppies start to go to their new home from the breeder
  • Time to start exposing them to people outside the family as soon as possible
  • Handle your puppy as often as possible and get it used to you handling or touching paws, ears, eyes, mouth, being brushed etc. This will make things such as grooming, trimming nails, cleaning teeth and administering ear or eye medications much easier
  • From week seven, puppies still with their litter should be separated for short periods of time from the litter to develop their own personality and mature
  • From weeks eight to 12, a fearful period can develop so avoid loud noises and anything that might be traumatic
  • Can begin teaching them simple commands
  • Enrol them in a good puppy school

FEEDING

  • Feed three to four times a day
  • From week seven they should be fully weaned from their mother
  • Make sure they are getting the right amount of calcium, protein and calories. See information on puppy diet
  • Old enough to eat dry puppy food and be lapping water
  • The energy requirements are nearly double that of an adult dog and diet should reflect this.
